• Author­i­ty is eas­i­ly abused, with good feel­ings and inten­tions, and often used beyond the scope it was grant­ed in. When we use author­i­ty we spend tremen­dous efforts hid­ing our selves behind it ;
• In physics : why gyro­scopes spin, why absolute tem­per­a­ture syn­chro­nizes with degrees Cel­sius, and a good rea­son for invent­ing entropy;
• The only impor­tant thing about laws is the amount of the courage one might need to undo them later ;
• Riv­er water is clear­est in autumn ;
• Things about human nature, and our insa­tiable appetite and striv­ing still too blur­ry to be expressed ;
• Fris­bees some­times sud­den­ly decide they are done with you and you should accept that as a fact of life.

Je ter­mine aujourd’hui l’édition 2010 de mon cours en ther­mo­dy­namique de l’ingénieur. Comme cela représente un peu moins d’un an de tra­vail con­tinu, j’ai du mal à cacher un cer­tain sen­ti­ment de satisfaction 😉 .

Par rap­port à l’année dernière, le vol­ume des cours a grossi d’une bonne moitié (ce qui accom­pa­gne le nom­bre d’heures en classe qui a aus­si gran­di). Les grands changements :

• le pro­gramme est découpé en dix cours au lieu de sept — le pro­gramme est mieux sec­tion­né, ce qui per­met de ne pas mélanger les concepts ;
• Les con­ven­tions de nota­tion et graphiques sont bien meilleures ;
• Cer­tains con­cepts impor­tants sont mieux expliqués, notam­ment la réversibil­ité et surtout l’entropie ;
• Il y a quelques réc­its de l’histoire des moteurs ajoutés ci-et-là (mon inten­tion ini­tiale était d’en écrire un par cours mais je n’ai pas pu tenir la charge).

Bien sûr, j’ai apporté une foule de change­ments mineurs dans les expli­ca­tions et la démarche. Toutes les fig­ures (une bonne cen­taine, mine de rien) ont été retra­vail­lées. Pour fêter ça, je me suis offert quelques soirées pour met­tre en place un jour­nal des mod­i­fi­ca­tions, avec fil RSS et tout et tout.

Pour la suite, j’ai toute une liste d’améliorations dans mon sac (je pense notam­ment à une meilleure étude du tra­vail en régime per­ma­nent et une bien meilleure expli­ca­tion de l’échelle de tem­péra­ture absolue). Toute­fois, je com­mence un nou­veau cours au print­emps qui risque de repouss­er ces change­ments à l’année suivante.

Comme il s’améliore, le cours s’alourdit et cela me fait peur. Il devient de plus en plus dif­fi­cile de ne pas noy­er l’essentiel, c’est à dire les quelque 5 ou 10% que les étu­di­ants retien­dront et dont ils se servi­ront ailleurs. Je vais peut-être expéri­menter avec un résumé exé­cu­tif par cours, sans équa­tion ni vocab­u­laire spécifique.

J’aimerais surtout pub­li­er les exer­ci­ces qui accom­pa­g­nent les cours, ce que je n’ai pas fait car cer­tains d’entre eux sont encore droit copiés d’ouvrages clas­siques. Avec un peu d’effort, je devrais cette année pou­voir y remédi­er et pro­pos­er au télécharge­ment suff­isam­ment de con­tenu pour qu’un/e étudiant/e puisse se for­mer seul/e.
Ensuite, on ver­ra pour les dia­pos­i­tives, sur lesquelles je fais main­tenant de gros efforts pour utilis­er du con­tenu libre et en attribuer les auteurs, ain­si que les fichiers sources des fig­ures, qua­si­ment pub­li­ables en l’état.

En bref, je suis heureux de partager des morceaux de mon petit univers. Rudolf Julius n’a qu’à bien se tenir, je repars pour un tour =)

Anno­tat­ed tips that might save some­one time.

1. To have your items (eg. bul­lets in lists) appear one by one, the most effi­cient way is to select them all at once, add appear cus­tom ani­ma­tion, and then indi­cate Start: on click.
   In this way there is no need to set-up a cus­tom ani­ma­tion for each of them (and they will each appear on click dur­ing the talk).
2. Mod­i­fy a tool­bar (View > Tool­bars > Cus­tomize) to add three or four align­ment but­tons. Cen­ter­ing images or mov­ing text on the sides is both faster and less frustrating.
3. Use Styles and Mas­ter Pages. Start using them today. The lat­er you start, the more work it’ll cost to switch. 
   • Styles (For­mat > Styles and For­mat­ting) define the styling of para­graphs, just as in Writer or Calc. You should focus on Title, Sub­ti­tle (ordi­nary text), Out­line 1 and 2 (for bul­let points).
     Each mas­ter page has its own ensem­ble of styles. [AFAIK] It’s not pos­si­ble to copy styles from a mas­ter page to another.
     Note that lan­guage is defined togeth­er with font (a long-time OO.o idiosyncrasy).
   • Mas­ter pages (View > Mas­ter > Slide Mas­ter) define where the styles are laid out on the slide.
     Each mas­ter slide can be laid out in a mul­ti­tude of [use­less] ways using the Lay­out tab on the docked task pane. AFAIK it is nei­ther pos­si­ble to assign a default lay­out to a giv­en mas­ter, nor the opposite.
     If you are not inter­est­ed in bul­let points and (right­ly) only want ordi­nary cen­tered text on your slide, edit the Sub­ti­tle style to your needs, even if can­not visu­al­ize any exam­ple text for it. When using that ordi­nary-text-only mas­ter, pick the Title slide layout.
   • The Click to add text box­es might repeal you (I hat­ed them) but they will now save you count­less hours. Soon you will refuse to do without.
   • It is not worth cre­at­ing new styles inside mas­ter pages, for you will have to assign them to text man­u­al­ly all along. Just edit the exist­ing ones.
4. If you set a back­ground pic­ture, do not use PNG, for it’ll hog the already slug­gish thumb­nail gen­er­a­tion. Quit (right­ly) rant­i­ng about how supe­ri­or the for­mat is and use JPEG instead.
5. Impress does not han­dle large files very well. Once you exceed fifty 1 MB pho­tos you will save time by split­ting your pre­sen­ta­tion in mul­ti­ple files.
6. To get a clean mul­ti­ple-slides-per-page hand­out, make a nor­mal, one-page-per-slide export to PDF, and edit the PDF with an exter­nal pro­gram (Impress just isn’t good at that). On Ubun­tu, evince does a won­der­ful job print­ing PDF files to new PDFs, re-arrang­ing lay­out in the process.

Work­ing dai­ly with Impress (I work with sev­er­al thou­sand slides) isn’t with­out some amount of swear­ing and requires patience. But then I remem­ber here is a free­dom-respect­ful tool that, in per­spec­tive, allows me to do extra­or­di­nary things, and earn my liv­ing. Giv­en by a com­mu­ni­ty. For free.
